Looking Back on 2026 & Our 2027 Roadmap
Hello Galaxy fans!
Thank you everyone, for helping make Once Upon a Galaxy such a smashing success in 2026. As the year begins to rollover, it’s time to reflect on where the game is today and share our plans for 2027.
Looking Back: Now Live
2026 was a very busy year for our small indie dev team, so let’s start with a few highlights from last year’s roadmap.
- Public launch of Once Upon a Galaxy across iOS, Android, and Steam.
- Monthly asynchronous tournaments, with an exciting two-day structure. Monthlies have been running for almost a year! Thousands of Galaxy’s Legendary players have participated in every event.
- A new deckbuilder and cosmetics switcher, making deckbuilding, filtering, and searching much faster.
- Upgraded UX and VFX throughout the game to make play smoother. This is an ongoing process.
- New additions for competitive players to grow faster and have more control over their Captains.
- Our first three expansions: Candylar, Mythbound, and Chromaria!
Looking Ahead: 2027
There’s a ton of exciting stuff coming as we head into 2027. I’ve split it into two groups:
- On Deck covers features the team is actively working on, with the goal of shipping them in 2027.
- On the Horizon covers ideas we’ve discussed as a team but that aren’t in active development right now.
As with anything, plans can change, so bear with us as we keep making Galaxy the best it can be!
On Deck
Features the dev team is actively working on and aiming to ship in 2027.
- UI/UX Cleanup & Polish. There’s plenty of cleanup left as we roll our “Dotty Dawdles Style Guide” out across the whole game. These updates will go live as they’re finished.
- Multi-Language Support. A big part of the Galaxy community lives outside the US, and many players aren’t native English speakers. We’ve always wanted to open the game up to more players, and this is a big step in that direction.
- Emotes & New Cosmetics. Emotes are one of our most requested features, but they’re a complicated beast in an asynchronous game. We think we’ve landed on a good plan, and they aren’t too far off!
- Seasonal Championships. We know many of you are eager to hear more about the Seasonals. They’re coming very soon. We just have a little more tech to iron out first.
- Ongoing Bug Fixes. As with any live-service game, new bugs are always popping up. We’ll keep squashing them as they appear while working through the backlog to tackle some older ones too.
- Quarterly New Expansions. New sets are the lifeblood of Galaxy and the most exciting time of the year. This time last year, we talked about ramping up to quarterly expansions, and we launched three tremendous sets between fall 2025 and fall 2026. The goal is to keep getting better at this and hit that exciting rhythm of a new expansion every 3–4 months.
On the Horizon
Features the team is excited about and has discussed, but that aren’t currently part of the 2027 development plan.
- “Save & Come Back” Support. When your phone closes the app in the background to free up memory, you can lose your place in a run. We’d like to save game states so you can pick up right where you left off.
- Friends Lists & Challenges. Galaxy is more fun with friends. How can we make that a more direct part of the experience?
- First Win & Featured Captain Rewards. The majority of Galaxy players jump in for a few minutes every day rather than putting in endless hours. We want those players to feel rewarded for their time and to encourage variety in how they play. Our goal is not to add the kind of FOMO you see in other games, so we’re carefully testing how best to implement these.
- Audio Upgrades. As with UI/UX and bug fixes, there’s always room to improve the audio experience.
- Achievements & Rewards. A fully fledged achievement system is no small undertaking in a game like this, but we think it would be really cool!
- Additional Competitive Play. Beyond structured tournaments like the Monthlies and Seasonals, we have ideas for other formats that would appeal to our most competitive players.
Thank You
Thank you all for coming along on this journey! We know your passion comes from the right place, and everyone is eager for the next fix or feature. We’re a very small team, and most of our week is spent heads-down building the best game we can. That sometimes means we’re quieter on social media than we’d like to be. Please know that quiet never means we aren’t listening. We read your feedback, bug reports, and ideas, and they shape what we build next.
See you in the stars!
